Facebook one of the worlds #1 online phenomenon is mostly the first thing that people type in there web address. If you want to learn how Facebook became famous read on to learn more about it.

Facebook was first used in Harvard University. It was a publication that Harvard University passed down in the beginning of the year for students to get to know each other better. It was also made to keep in contact with other colleagues over the Internet. Facebook became famous enough that the program soon went to other colleges. Mark Zuckerburg made Facebook more famous and a nationwide website. Mark Zuckerburg founded Facebook while studying pyschology at Harvard University. Zuckerburg developed a number of social networking sites for students in Harvard. Zuckerburg created Coursematch which allowed user’s to view people taking there degree. And he also created Facemash where you could rate people attractiveness.

In 2004 Mark Zuckerburg launched the website “thefacebook” as it was originally known as. Students from Harvard started to sign up for a profile on “thefacebook”. 1,200 Harvard students signed up and after one month over half of the undergraduate population had a profile. The network extended to other Boston universities, the Ivy League, and then to all U.S universities. In August 2005 “thefacebook” became Facebook.com after the address became purchase for $200,000. U.S high schools started to sign up for Facebook, then it started to spread world wide and even reaching U.K universities.

In September 2006 Facebook went from educational institutions to anyone that has a registered email address. Facebook makes a profit from advertising its revenue and is free to sign up. Yahoo and Google had tried to buy-out Facebook for a price of 2 billion dollars. Mark Zuckerburg has so far has refused to sell the website. Facebook feature’s continued developing during 2007. User’s can now give gift to friends, post free advertisements, and develop there own applications. During this time the company announced that the number of registered user’s had reach 30 million making it the largest social-networking website with an education focus.

Earlier on, celebrities started to make a profile Facebook. It was rumored that Prince William had registered for an account but was later found out to be an impostor. Other celebrities like the MP David Miliband, Jo Whiley the radio D.J., the actor Orlando Bloom, the artist Tracy Elmin, and Jimmy Wales the founder of Wikipedia. These celebrities are considered are considered high profile members. In July 2007 officials banned a flash mob style water fight in Hyde Park that was organized through Facebook. Later there was a controversy at Oxford students that university officials were checking students Facebook profile.

The legal case against Facebook dates back in September 2004 when Divya Narendra, and the two brother’s Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who founded ConnectU, a social networking site; accused Zuckerburg of copying their ideas and coding. Mark Zuckerburg worked as a computer programmer for them before Facebook was created. This case was dismissed due to a technicality in March 2007 but without a ruling.

Facebook today is becoming more worldwide and one of the most popular website in the world.
