Cable TV: Negative Impact

Do you watch a lot of television? Too much television is not a good thing. In the past 50 years, cable and films have become a large part of a family’s entertainment. Therefore, the influences from it have exceptionally grown. Also, thanks to constant commercial interruptions, concentration spans may even become limited. Cable should be made more appropriate.

To begin with, cable often distracts young children that need to concentrate on doing their school work. In addition, the amount of alluring channels have increased: for example, “Cartoon Network” and “Disney Channel”. Children may sometimes watch inappropriate shows or advanced commercials that pollute their minds. Also, many more people believe almost everything they see on cable TV nowadays, for example, 64% of adults trust what they see on the news according to articles on the internet.

In addition, the future of television was supposed to be very bright and exciting. In a “Time” article , Boston University President Dr.Daniel L. Marsh ,predicted, “If the (television) craze continues with the present level of programs, we are destined to have a nation of morons”. It did not take long for people to branch out and take full advantage of this technology’s potential. With the advancement in programming and increased financial support, the world and its marketplaces were, brought into the living room of viewers. Also, by the year of 2003, 69% of all US households had televisions. Almost ten-thousand cable systems were provided!

On the other hand, television may have a few positive effects on society as well. Over the years, it has helped educate young children. Many educational shows, such as, “Sesame Street” and “Barney and Friends” have helped young children and toddlers alike by educating them. They have helped children take little steps in their lives, like helping them learn the alphabet or learn how to count. These shows also teach children about subjects like, math or literacy. Over the years these teachings have even improved. Although, cable TV has more of a negative impact than a positive one.

In conclusion, overall television has had a negative impact on society more than it has had positive impacts. Nowadays, children usually watch over 3 hours of television a day, which has proved to be unhealthy for their minds and education.  There is very little world importance shown on television and there should be more useful things programmed on cable TV. Overall, it should to be improved and made more age appropriate and fit for viewers. There should be more educational shows, too!
