Is Soda Good???

Jose M.

Have you ever thought about what happens in your body when you drink coke or sprite or any type of soda? It is not a pretty site. Also, it could ruin your health. New York City should prohibit gargantuan soda drinks because they are unhealthy for people.
First, according to nutritionsearchcenter.org, when you digest too much soda it wreaks havoc on the human organism. The main problem is high sugar.  Additionally, Jolt cola a well-known soda company uses a lot of sugar even their motto says it all: “All the sugar, and twice the caffeine”. If you drink too many soft drinks, you will eventually get health problems like diabetes, high sugar, cholesterol, and it could also lead to cardiovascular problems. Bloomberg also has warned people that they are killing themselves with sugar, which has been linked to an astringent illness type 2 diabetes. On the week of 3-10-13 to 3-17-13 New York City’s ban of large sugary drinks was struck down by a judge.
Secondly, Mayor Bloomberg of New York City is trying to prohibit large sugary soft drinks. He says it’s for that “obesity could come to an end”.  He proposed this ban in 2008 and he still is trying his best to ban large sugary drinks from New York City. According to the website http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/13/soda-obesity-diabetes-ban-nyc  the obesity rate among adults in NYC is about 24% (up six points in the past decade) but lower than the national average of 34%. A 16 oz., the largest size allowed under Bloomberg’s proposal packs 56 grams of sugar. That’s a lot of sugar!  Furthermore, it states that Americans drink a lot more soda than anyone else in the world according to a 2011 Euromonitor study.
On the other hand, Mayor Bloomberg should let New Yorkers decide on their own if they want to drink a large or even extra-large soda. According to http://www.nytimes.com, Justice Milton A. Tingling of state supreme court in Manhattan called the limits “arbitrary and capricious”. Echoing the complaints of city business owners and consumers, who had deemed the rules unworkable and unenforceable, with confusing loopholes and voluminous exemptions. Furthermore, one of ABC’s news reporters went out to ask people what they thought about his ban. A lot more people disagreed with this large soda drinks ban. One of the people they interviewed Mary Elizabeth Quinn said that she doesn’t agree with NYC’s regulation of sugary drinks. She is just one of many people who disagree with this ban. “It’s just not right says Tingling, people no what’s right and what’s wrong. So they should just make their own decisions”.
In conclusion, New York City’s large soda ban is one of Mayor Bloomberg’s big efforts that he wants to conclude and also lots of New Yorkers too. Too much sugar and junky foods lead to obesity and obesity could lead to major health problems or even death. NYC’s health is very important and we do don’t want to be unhealthy because NYC’s health is what decides the future of this great city and the people who are going to inhabit it. Most significally, this could be prevented if people would start eating much healthy in New York and all the world, also the large soda ban would help us to start eating healthy.
