Have you ever been embarrassed by your family or culture? In the stories, “Abuela Invents the Zero” and “The All American Slurp” , the round characters: Connie and the Lin’s daughter, had to deal with embarrassment. However, they both learned from their experience. Finally, they both learned that it was ok to be mortified. It takes courage to change.        In “Abuela Invents the Zero” , Connie learns respect. First, Connie decided to walk behind her mom and grandmother so people wouldn’t know she is with them. Then, in church, Connie was so embarrassed she became frozen with fear and couldn’t help Abuela, who was lost. Connie realized she was wrong and was a jerk. As a result, Connie learned to appreciate others. In “The All American Slurp” , the Lin’s daughter learns about courage. First, the Lin’s daughter strips celery stalks along with her family and then it causes a awkward silence. Second, the Lin’s daughter realized her family is slurping soup too loud and she fled into the bathroom. The Lin’s daughter finds out that all Americans slurp from Meg, the Gleason’s daughter. Therefore, the Lin’s daughter learns about why she should have fortitude. In the stories, “Abeula  Invents the Zero” and “The All American Slurp” the characters and stories are alike. In both stories Connie and the Lin’s daughter want to fit in. Also, they do with fashion, in the “The All American Slurp” the Lin’s daughter tries on new clothes and in “Abuela Invents the Zero” Connie went to a fashion show. Both stories have similar topics, in so the stories are similar. Connie and the Lin’s daughter both went through embarrassment. They learned from it and began to grow. Connie and the Lin’s daughter both learned it takes courage to change.
